BMW Motorrad today announced an exclusive opportunity for customers and enthusiasts to gain a sneak preview of the brand's new six-cylinder BMW K 1600 GTL in Australia.
Over the coming months, the ground-breaking K 1600 GTL will go on a national tour, visiting select Australian BMW Motorrad Dealers, with the bike due to launch in Australia mid-year. Morgan and Wacker will have the bike on show 28 March - 4 April in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and Coastline Motorrad at the Sunshine Coast 4-7 April 2011.
The revolutionary new K 1600 GT and GTL sees the introduction of a new light-weight, compact in-line six-cylinder power unit, developed and produced in-house by BMW Motorrad. The transversely mounted engine is by far the lightest serially produced six-cylinder in-line motorcycle engine, for motorcycles in the class > 1000 cc.
The smooth 6 cylinder engine produces output of 118 kW and maximum torque of 175 Newton metres. Over 70 per cent of the maximum torque is available from 1 500 rpm.
As a virtually unique "mega-tourer", the K 1600 GTL places a strong emphasis on active safety due to standard BMW Motorrad Integral ABS and Dynamic Traction Control for maximum safety when accelerating. Suspension set-up can be varied with three modes to choose from ("Rain", "Road", "Dynamic").
Electronic Suspension Adjustment ESA II is also available for optimum adaptation to all uses and load states and road conditions. In another world first, the K 1600 offers optional Adaptive Headlights for increased safety at night in conjunction with the standard xenon headlamp and fibre optic rings.
As the K 1600 models are not expected to arrive for sale on Australian shores for several months, customers and enthusiasts are urged to contact BMW Motorrad on This email address is being protected from spambots. BMW Motorrad announces pricing for the new BMW K 1600 GT and GTL.
- All new 6-cylinder in-line engine
- Priced from $34,990 with high level of standard specification
- 118 kW power, 175 Nm of torque
BMW is aiming to shake up the touring and luxury-touring motorcycle markets with a pair of high-torque twins due in Australia within weeks.
The all new BMW K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL models will see BMW offering 6-cylinder in-line power units for the first time.
For decades, 6-cylinder in-line engines have exercised a special fascination. In addition to their perfectly smooth running, they also offer supreme output and torque, giving the rider even more riding pleasure. It is for this reason that BMW Motorrad developed this engine in-house, offering customers even more variety.
The new 6-cylinder 1600 cc engine produces 118 kW and 175 Nm of torque; this therefore offers a high level of pulling power, especially in the lower and medium engine speed range.
Acceleration to 100 km/h is of the order of 3.2 seconds (without pannier), making the K 1600 a remarkably brisk machine.
Optimal handling is assured due to the precise suspension design. Classical BMW virtues such as safety, the fulfilment of the highest environmental standards and perfect ergonomics for both rider and pillion are set to define the new benchmark and thus the leading role in the middleweight class.
Early indications are that this innovative, exciting and distinctively styled range of bikes will be eagerly snapped up by customers. Strong interest has been registered by BMW Motorrad dealers across Australia since the new K 1600 range was announced.
Now BMW Motorrad can reveal pricing for the two models which begin arriving in dealerships in late-May. The BMW K 1600 GT will be priced from $34,990* plus on road costs, and the K 1600 GTL will be priced from $36,990* plus on road costs.
Due to historic trends Australian standard specification for both models is very high compared to other markets, making both of the K 1600 models extremely good value.
